Our Animals

We have many animals on our property, a few of which are featured below. It is especially fun watching the little ones grow. We enjoy all of our rescued animals.

Baby

Baby
When Baby was a young foal, she developed chronic leg problems that would never let her become a strong working or riding horse. She has been utilized as a teaching instrument for basic leading, riding, and grooming skills. She is now over 20 years old and on permanent loan from her owners, who pay 100% of her feed and care. She is inseparable and best friends with Freddie.

Freddie

Freddie
Freddie was donated to the NWHBAS through a local neighbor. He has been a resident of the area for over 25 years, having been illegally removed from his herd on the dry lakes in Nevada State in 1980. He has been passed around to several nearby owners in Nevada County, as everyone's loving "pocket burro" and was unanimously voted as the sanctuary's mascot and symbol of the organization.

Buddy

Buddy
Buddy was originally adopted by a private individual from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). After years of neglect and subsequent malnutrition by his former owner, he was relinquished to the NWHBAS for better care through the efforts of a county animal shelter.

Maggie

Maggie
In November 2008, we welcomed Maggie into our mix. She is a five year old, small dark brown burro with a light brown muzzle and light brown coloring around her eyes.

Timmy

Timmy
Little Timmy, Maggie's jack, accomanied her on their trip from Los Gatos. He is a small gray burro and has the same color markings on his muzzle and eyes as his mother. He has become more social as he has gotten older, being just six months old when he arrived with his mom.

Skippy

Skippy
Skippy is the newest member of the family. We were in for a surprise as Maggie was pregnant when she arrived. On June 7, 2009, little Skippy was born. He is brownish-gray and is catching up in size with his bother Timmy.

Princeton

Princeton
The sanctuary started 2010 by adding another horse on January 4th.  Princeton is a Percheron/Mustang cross and stands 15 hands.  This nineteen year old gelding is all black with a small white spot on his forehead and is quite a handsome guy.  You can see him palling around with our two youngest burros or just following one of us around in the paddock.  He has an arthritic neck and holds his head slightly off to one side.  He is a sweetie!
